yea the problem with xmpp or matrix is that if your homeserver/server goes down or goes away you're basically screwed unless you have an alt, and even then your rooms will also be down for the count session is better because it doesn't have homeservers, or central servers at all (unless you have an open group). i have lost friends on matrix purely because my homeserver didn't want to communicate with their homeserver anymore (speaking as an ex-halogen user). kinda like fedi actually...
