the thing about addiction is that not only is it the motor of the economy, it crashes all our conceptions of self and free will. the fact that people's brains can be hacked for profit doesn't align with what we're comfortable believing about ourselves.
the UK is undergoing an epidemic after the gambling companies really started to bribe the government back in the 00's and got gambling advertising everywhere as online gaming took off. there are so many gambling addicts that will destroy their lives, gamble away their assets and homes etc. gambling addiction is the easiest one to grasp because for most people it just seems insane that you could ever not be able to stop. like you or i would be able to play some slot machine or cards for fun or whatever and probably lose a bit as it is statistically determined we will but we would never get so carried away it would become a regular thing. yet if you ever talk to gambling addicts, they can be rationally aware that statistically they are going to lose, but they don't care. some have imaginary 'systems' but others don't even care about winning and there's many in this book that even say they don't LIKE winning because it interrupts the flow of the game!
